A clinical view of obesity

Obesity describes an excess accumulation of body fat that can affect health. It is influenced by biology, environment, medication, sleep, stress, access to food, and many other factors. It should not be reduced to willpower or appearance.

Where BMI helps—and where it does not

Body mass index can be a useful screening measure at population level, but it does not directly measure body composition or tell the whole story about an individual’s health. A clinician may also consider waist measurements, health conditions, mobility, previous treatment and personal goals.

When specialist support can help

A specialist assessment can clarify health risks and the range of evidence-based options. These may include nutrition support, movement, psychological care, medication or bariatric procedures. The right plan is individual and should be made with an appropriately qualified clinician.
